Makenzie & CJ’s Wedding

Amidst the enchanting ambiance of Laurel Ridge Barn, CJ and Makenzie’s love story unfolds, weaving together high school connections, an undeniable bond, and an unexpected proposal, culminating in a Spring celebration that captures the essence of their journey.

Of her LAGUNA gown, Makenzie said: “It was so me! Very simple detail, but elegant and enough detail to seem bridal without being “too plain.” I loved the neckline and the drop sleeves so much! The low back was stunning! The silhouette was exactly what I had in mind and provided some shape, but hug in all the right places! I had the buttons added on the back to elevate the already gorgeous dress!”

Tell Us Your Love Story

How did you meet?

We met in high school, became friends quickly and would hang out in the same groups occasionally. After graduation, we loosely kept in touch! During COVID, we went on a trip with some friends and started texting everyday after! We had always had a crush on each other and were now both single! The texts turned flirty and soon we were hanging out very often which led to CJ asking me to be his girlfriend! I transferred to his university – for him and a better on-campus experience during COVID. We dated for a year and seven months before CJ got on one knee!

How Did He Put A Ring On It?

CJ had an elaborate plan to have “will you marry me” cut out into paper lanterns as well as a bonfire and some dinner waiting when I came over one night. Unfortunately it was very windy and the house was nearly set on fire! Instead he hung a bunch of pictures of our memories on some trees in the yard and hung lights around them. My roommate drove me over for a “game night” where CJ surprised me with a ring instead!

Where did you draw inspiration from?

Mainly Pinterest and Instagram! I would follow vendors on social media and collect ideas from what I had seen previously along with a few of our own twists! Since it was a spring/early summer wedding, I wanted it to feel light and bright with some warm tones – greens, tans, and white it was!

What made the wedding personal to you?

We each had our close friends and family with us the morning of while getting ready. It was so sweet to see everyone’s excitement! Seeing everyone together, the only time we’ll have all these people in the same room, was amazing and we felt so much love! While taking photos, it felt as if we were the only people at the beautiful venue! We had done most of the planning ourselves so to see it all come together was so rewarding!

What were you most nervous or excited about?

I was a little nervous about our first dance as I don’t have much rhythm! Once we started, CJ calmed my nerves! I was most excited for the big smooch and hearing us introduced as husband and wife for the first time!

Now, the most important part – the Dress!

Tell us about your dress?

It was so me! Very simple detail, but elegant and enough detail to seem bridal without being “too plain.” I loved the neckline and the drop sleeves so much! The low back was stunning! The silhouette was exactly what I had in mind and provided some shape, but hug in all the right places! I had the buttons added on the back to elevate the already gorgeous dress!

What stockist did you get it from?

I purchased my wedding dress from Marie and Marie in downtown Sioux Falls

What was your most memorable moment from your day?

After our ceremony, CJ and I drove to the reception venue in my uncle’s vintage, white Chevy truck! It was so special to have some alone time to take in what had just taken place! We were so giddy! It was sweet to have CJ help me in and out of the vehicle and be able to sit real close on the bench seat
